A short period of Sabauda government and the Austrian one, Sicily was above all a vice kingdom, governed by an administrator of the King. In this period Noble families increased their importance and power, manifestation of which was the construction of noble palaces and to finance religious orders, maybe with the hope of earning a piece of Heaven. In Sicily and Palermo, which was the main town of Sicily, rose churches and monasteries in a race for the more beautiful ones.
